What is a presentation and how to deliver an outstanding presentation?

Giving a presentation for the first time is really terrifying. I remember when I was presenting for the very first time, shivering from head to toe, nervousness made me sweat hard, and a stuttering voice. Damn! I would laugh now on that thought, but from then to now, I gave many semi-presentations with much confidence and efficiency.

You might be thinking about what semi-presentation is. When you are working with a team or in some organization, you might not be the whole responsible for the presentation. That is what I call a semi-presentation.

When you are presenting with a team or a couple of people, there is an essence of competition, you try to be more effective than others. Or, if you are the only presenter, you want the presentation to be the best in terms of efficiency, confidence, and enlightenment.

Here are the pointers to be taken care of while presenting, mostly focused on oral presentation. How to make a PowerPoint presentation and slides, you can refer to my post on MS PowerPoint.

Plan yourself keeping the below tips into consideration -

1. A handful knowledge on the main topic

In this era, we all have the internet and smartphones handy. It is important to do proper research on the topic that you are going to give the presentation. Make notes of the major points, and read as much as you can but avoid digging more than it is needed.

2. Practice before the final event

The easiest and common way to practice is in front of a mirror or you can take help from someone and rehearse two to three times until you are confident enough to present before the larger audience.

3. Be confident and relaxed

Do not panic and keep yourself calm while you are ready to give the presentation. If you are nervous, think about the learning you did beforehand, or you can watch some fun videos or some presentations given by great leaders and study their ways of presenting. That will give a lot of motivation and knowledge of showcasing yourself.

4. Go through the notes one last time

You already studied and practiced all, but do have a look at the notes one more time so that you do not miss any important topic. Try to remember all the major points to such an extent that you don’t need to look at the notes while presenting.

5. Play a teacher

We might not notice; however, a teacher always gives presentations of the knowledge they have. While teaching, the teacher is confident about what they are telling, and they explain each and every important point in such a way that the students can understand it easily.

The major point here is, present the details in the language and/or manner which can be grasped by the audience quickly, and for that, you should know your audience well.

This point is my personal advice, but it is completely your choice, and you can skip this accordingly.

6. Involve the audience

If it is a monologue and you are the only person speaking will make the presentation boring, and though the information/data is of great importance, people will not be involved completely in listening. They might look into their mobile phones, e-mails, or gossip among themselves.

You can either put across some questions for the audience or pause a bit and ask if they have some questions about what you are presenting. This will keep them alert and engaged.

7. Your own opinion

It is good to put the research details done by someone else and their point of view. Along with that, it is of much importance to give your final opinion while concluding your presentation. That will show the involvement and study you did behind these final few minutes of presentation.

There are always our own exceptional ways of doing things, still, before you do - ‘Think’, ‘Plan’, and then ‘Implement’ the best of you. Taking suggestions is nowhere a wrong approach besides the final product must have a pinch of YOU.
